Gill Douglas is an artist and maker working with paint and thread, creating layered paintings and portraits from her studio in South Africa. Her practice explores memory, time and the stories we carry, drawing inspiration from the colours, textures and experiences of the many countries she has called home. Working with paint, fabric, collage, embroidery and machine stitching, Gill often incorporates vintage, rescued and repurposed fabrics into her work. Stitching is central to her creative philosophy — holding things together, mending, altering and giving things a second chance. Her work reflects on the fragility of life and memory, the marks we leave behind and the beauty found in imperfection. At its heart, Gill’s work is about connection: the threads that link our shared experiences and the stories that make us who we are.
Each series has a story woven through, connecting the pieces through colourways and themes.
